FALMOUTH LIONS CLUB
SPEAK-OUT

Over the years, Lions Clubs have prided themselves on developing potential in youth. As a result of Lions’ service, young people throughout the world have grown into leaders, learned respect for the rights and beliefs of others, and have made useful contributions to society as productive citizens.

The Lions Club of Falmouth, in cooperation with the Lions Clubs of District 41L and Multiple District 41, sponsor an annual public speaking contest, “Speak-Out” for students in grades nine through twelve. “Speak-Out” is an excellent opportunity for students to express their thoughts and ideas in a public forum. It provides them the opportunity to think about important current issues, to organize their thoughts and ideas, and to effectively present them.

The contest is open to full-time students of any accredited school in grades 9 through 12. Students select a topic of their own choosing and prepare a speech approximately five minutes in length. Students are ranked by a panel of three judges and evaluated according to the delivery of the speech, the material in the speech, and their response to two questions. Contestants advance in the competition by winning competitions at the local (club) level, regional, district and multi-district levels.

The Falmouth Lions Club began participating in the “Speak-Out “program in 2004-05.  With the support of her teacher and coach, Falmouth High School teacher Danny Paul; Jennifer Shapiro, a freshman at Falmouth High School, represented our club during the “Speak-Out” competition held at the District 41L Convention in Auburn, Maine in April, 2005. Although she placed third at the District Convention, by default she went on to represent the clubs of District 41L at the Multiple District Convention held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in May 2005.

The Falmouth Lions Club is proud to sponsor this annual public speaking program for our community’s youth.
